The Southern Africa Biomedical Engineering Conference, known as SABEC, is organised by UCT MedTech and BESSA, the Biomedical Engineering Society of South Africa. It takes place over two days and brings together researchers, academics, industry professionals, clinicians, healthcare practitioners, innovators, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and students working in biomedical engineering.
The conference covers the full range of the field, from early-stage research and engineering through clinical translation, regulatory approval and implementation within health systems.
A particular focus is placed on innovations suited to resource limited settings across Africa and other low- and middle-income regions.
The programme includes scientific sessions, keynote presentations, panel discussions, a student hackathon, and industry exhibitions. Delegates also have the opportunity to network throughout the event, including at a dinner held on the second day.
This is the first SABEC conference, and it is intended to build a lasting platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing in biomedical engineering across the region.
From point-of-care tests to advanced imaging and physiological signal analysis.
Materials, cells and delivery systems that repair, replace and treat.
Human movement, prosthetics, orthotics and technologies that restore function.
Device design, surgical robotics, implants and manufacturing for medicine.
AI, informatics and connected care, from algorithm to bedside.
Keeping health technology working, safe and well-managed across the system.
Low-cost, high-impact engineering designed for resource-limited settings.
Green hospitals, circular design and climate-resilient health systems.
Moving technology from bench to market to bedside in Africa.
Building the next generation of engineers, and doing it responsibly.
